In the CAD software industry, for the vast majority BricsCAD will do everything that AutoCAD will do and do it in a similar manner! Some argue it will do it much quicker too! Some will also say that it will do it better! Let me put it another way, in your choice of mobiles, are you in the Apple (iOS) camp or the Google (Android) camp? In most cases it will come down to personal preferences or for some its not about functionality but about branding and image! Its very first iteration appeared back in 2001, and its latest, V.21, was recently released! BricsCAD is no “new kid on the block”īricsCAD has been around for an awfully long time. It is not trying to be AutoCAD in the same way that Dyson was never intended to be a copy of Hoover or any other vacuum cleaner in the marketplace. With over two decades worth of experience in the industry, BricsCAD is not just a viable but in many day-to-day uses, a better alternative to AutoCAD. The more I looked at BricsCAD and spoke to users the more I realised that BricsCAD use exists in businesses that also use Autodesk software and does so with seamless interoperability and efficiency.

It has a long-established history that cannot be competed against. This is akin to saying Dyson is (or was) trying to be a Hoover! No, Dyson is the natural progression of technology/science with time and great entrepreneurship and brilliance of James Dyson.ĪutoCAD is the go to choice for many design professionals as for many people it was the only viable option for those looking to work in a DWG environment.

To think this would be doing BricsCAD and any other Computer Aided Design (CAD) software a disservice! It may look like it and feel like it, but it is not! Is BricsCAD trying to be AutoCAD? Let us get one thing out of the way, right at the outset: BricsCAD is NOT AutoCAD. So, why over 30 years later is AutoCAD still the mainstay of so many people, and why has no other software managed to compete with it? My experience in design dates to the days of draughting before CAD, the old-fashioned way. So, of course, our next question was: Why BricsCAD? With the constant stream of changes in business model and licensing (which we won't cover today but will do so in detail later in the series), we realised clients were not just looking for an alternative.Īnd the name that kept coming up was BricsCAD®. Will people actually change their design software that is entrenched into their businesses and workflows? I have received this question so many times that I had to stop and ask myself if the market had finally decided if enough is enough?Īre companies really looking at alternatives? Values between 0 and 240 are accepted.ĭefines whether macros are enabled when loading a VBA project. One question I keep getting asked over and over is, "Is there an alternative to my AutoCAD® software?" If set to zero, automatec saves are turned off. Sets interval in minutes for automatic saves.

If set to zero, each save is a full save. If the estimate of wasted space exceeds the value set by ISAVEPERCENT, the next save will be a full save, which resets the wasted space estimate to 0. Sets the amount of wasted space tolerated in a drawing file expressed as a percentage of the total file size. Improves the speed of incremental saves if switched off, especially for large drawings. Under Program Options, Open and Save there are several options to enable auto saving in BricsCAD.Ĭontrols the creation of a backup file (BAK).
