Mac was such a wonderful man and I am grateful to have known him for so many years. Message: Mac was the father of my best and dearest friend, Rowena Macleod, who I have known since we were 14 years old. all.It st won’t be the same around here with out him. We went to Fair Hill most every year and always were made to feel like family, as we enjoyed every part of it.
I’ll always remember his warm smile and those wonderful stories and the flag he flew in the back yard.I always loved hearing the pipes play at his house,including just recently. When we moved in as neighbors in 1989, he and Meg welcomed us as family. Message: Mac was one my all time favorite people. Message: Oh how our family loves the Fairhill festival!
You all are in our thoughts and prayers for healing, peace, and great joyous love that was shared by Mac! We loved him for bringing us wonderful daughters And families with whom we share special fondness. Message: Our planet has lost a legend, but Mac won’t soon be forgotten for his kindness, talent, wisdom and great love. Being Scots bred, he made me think of home. Message: being involved with the Fairhill games over the passed 3 year I was only in his presence a few times, but it makes me smile to think and remember this lilting voice, good day laddie. He is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Catriona and Stuart Binder-Macleod, Deirdre and Duncan Bonnell, and Rowena Macleod and Mark Wygent and grandchildren, Benjamin Binder-Markey (wife Caitlin), Rina Binder-Macleod, Maclean Nagaswami, and Fiona Iyer.Ī memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, beginning at 1:00 p.m. He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret Macleod (née Plowman) and his brother, Angus Macleod. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and Griswold Home Care for their many kindnesses. He will be remembered for his love of cribbage, crosswords, the cryptic byword, and a cuppa’ strong tea. He was a talented woodworker, a great storyteller, and a gifted singer. He enjoyed a good laugh and had a joke for every occasion.
Up until his 88th year, he continued his annual pilgrimage to the Glenfiddich Piping Competition at Blair Castle, Scotland. In 2010, he was inducted into the EUSPBA Circle of Honor. In 1995, he was awarded the Balvenie Medal in Scotland for his services to the piping world. He dedicated his life to improving the standards of bagpiping by founding the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association and the United States Piping Foundation. Along with 4 others, he founded the Fairhill Colonial Highland Gathering and acted as either convener or president for the next 50 years. He was a tree surgeon and ran his own company for 30 years. His two passions were trees and the Great Highland Bagpipe. They immigrated to the United States in 1956 with their young daughter.
After demobilization, he worked as a forester on the west coast of Scotland where he met and married the lovely Margaret Plowman. During WWII, he proudly served in the British Royal Air Force and flew 33 missions. He was born in Ullapool, a small fishing village in the north of Scotland. Murdoch Maclean Macleod, age 89, set sail for Tir nan og, land of the ever young, on Saturday, September 21, 2013.
